Winter is indeed a high time for cozy holiday festivities, and your vacation itinerary probably consists of ski trips to the snowcapped mountains, strolls along the Christmas market, warm days listening to jazzy carols, and cuddling up with blankets, hot tea, and your loved ones by the fireplace.

Winter, however, also proves to be a very good time to be planning your next big holiday ahead, namely your 2024 summer vacation. We all know last-minute booking can get tricky and expensive once we near the summer season. Reservations in advance before the prices start skyrocketing might prove to be a smart strategy you will not regret in a few months’ time, when all tickets are sold out and you inevitably run out of new beachy destinations to explore.

Always a summer vacation staple for many European residents, and now a rising star for travelers from far abroad, the Croatian southern coast on the Adriatic Sea beckons new and returning visitors alike with its sun-kissed beaches, fresh seafood delicacies, historical marvels, and warm hospitality of the locals.

We begin our coastal journey in Zadar, a bustling city where its ancient, well-preserved traces from the Roman Empire mingle with the tranquil shores of the Adriatic Sea. A slow stroll along the atmospheric Old Town, where the Roman Forum and the St. Donatus Church are located, will give you a glimpse of the lives of emperors and serve as iconic symbols of the city's medieval charm. As the sun sets, head to the Greeting to the Sun installation and witness a mesmerizing light show from the shimmering multi-layered glass plates on the stone-paved waterfront. The combination of ancient ruins, modern art installations, and the soothing sounds of the sea create an immersive experience.

Zadar is not only rich in history but also culinary delights. Indulge in local specialties like Pasticada, a slow-cooked beef dish, and be sure to sample local specialties such as Maraschino, a traditional cherry liqueur locally produced since the 16th century. The blend of history, art, and gastronomy makes Zadar an excellent start to your trip along the Adriatic coast.

Next, we take a small island getaway to the Island of Murter, a relatively well-hidden Adriatic treasure adorned with crystalline waters and charming villages. Known for its beaches like Slanica and Kosirina, the island offers a mix of secluded coves and family-friendly shores. After a day splashing and napping on the golden sand, you should explore the village of Murter, where stone houses and narrow streets exude Dalmatian charm. Pair your meals here with a glass of local Babić wine, produced from local grapes thriving in the island’s vineyards.

Now, we venture south to Vodice, a coastal town pulsating with vibrant energy and a lively marina scene. With its numerous beaches, including the Plava Beach and the Malo Vitra Beach, Vodice offers not only a good swim, but also various dynamic water sports for those craving a little fun, from windsurfing to paddleboarding.

After washing off the salt from your skin, wander through the vibrant promenade along the coast, lined with cafes, restaurants, shops, and bars. As many coastal cities do, Vodice's culinary scene is a treat for seafood enthusiasts. Local dishes such as fresh calamari or black cuttlefish risotto aremust-tries in this city.

Following your few relaxing days spent in drowsy sunlight, take a 20-minute ferryboat ride to Šibenik, a city with medieval marvels. Meander through the labyrinthine streets of the old town for a panoramic view of the city and sea. You can stop by many historical landmarks along the way, such as the UNESCO-listed St. James' Cathedral, masterpiece of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Again, local food thrives in Šibenik, beginning with Šibenik Drniš prosciutto, a renowned Dalmatian delicacy, and škampi na buzaru, a flavorful scampi stew cooked with olive oil, wine, fresh herbs, and garlic.

If you feel your tan is golden enough and you have had your fair share of sunny beaches, why not conclude your Adriatic adventure with a visit to Krka National Park, a haven of waterfalls cascading through lush green landscapes? You can hike the trails that lead to panoramic viewpoints and breathe in the fresh air of this natural sanctuary. For an immersive experience, embark on a boat tour to the Krka River's estuary and the captivating Roški Slap waterfall. This national park showcases the beauty of untouched landscapes, creating a perfect finale to your Adriatic journey.

So, this winter vacation, in between your gift-shopping, family gatherings, cookie baking, and other cozy activities, maybe you should also be taking the time to book your flight ahead, to an Adriatic adventure that promises much more than just sunny beaches and a golden tan. Now is the moment to seize the opportunity to embark on a summer journey that may just turn out to be your unforgettable odyssey – so, why wait?
