The issuance of newly redesigned student ID cards has been announced, applicable from the 2023 spring semester.

Its all-new simple yet meaningful and trendy design was the top-voted student design from the Ewha Student ID Card Design Contest, which was held from May 2 to 11, 2022.

According to a faculty member from the Student Services Team at the Office of Student Affairs, Lee Soojin, who is in charge of student ID cards, pre-registration for incoming Ewha students will take place over two rounds, held before and after the start of a new semester respectively. Returning students will be able to renew their cards in April.

To learn more, Ewha Voice sat down with the student nominees to talk about their design.

The winners of the Ewha Student ID Card Design Contest were the members of team Le.D, consisting of Kim Hyeree from the Division of Design and Lim Jeong Eun from the Department of Fashion Industry. The two entered the contest with the determination to create a design that could be both stylish and representative of Ewha. Researching several card designs including those from Hyundai and Kakao as points of reference, they wanted to make sure the design was not only in line with recent trends but also unique.

When requested to give a brief description of the design, Lim explained that the main element of the design was a half depiction of the Ewha logo on one side. She was inspired by the idea of half of a stamp shown when affixing a seal on two copies of an official document. Through this, the design displays a formal image along with Ewha’s symbol to boost the school spirit of Ewha students. Kim also emphasized the half logo, which appears on both sides, pointing out that it actually connects the front and back sides, differing greatly from other designs.

Another main feature, Lim mentioned, is the vertical design. She noted that it is an unusual approach to have the design oriented vertically for a student ID card. Kim expounded on the idea that among cards from other schools, there were no vertical designs, making their design more unique.

When the new design was announced, Lim and Kim received an outpouring of congratulations and warm words from the school community. They shared some anecdotes about how surprised their friends were that the design they voted for was from their own colleagues. Along with that, Lim and Kim were very delighted whenever they saw comments rooting for their design online on the Ewha Everytime app.

As a student majoring in design, Kim cherishes this experience in a meaningful way and hopes students feel proud and pleased with the new design when using their new ID cards.

“It is probably one of the biggest accomplishments I have made while at Ewha,” she expressed.

Lim also mentioned the timelessness of their achievement, as Ewha students will keep using student ID cards featuring their design perhaps even for the next few generations. She feels proud and thankful that she had a hand in designing the new student ID card.

Many other students expressed their elation at the new look for their student ID cards.

Cha Yujin, a rising sophomore from the Division of Communication & Media, commented on the new design saying she liked how the school logo got more prominent than before, allowing students to identify their school easily.

Kang Nahyun, another rising sophomore from the Department of Chemistry & Nano Science, remarked that she was satisfied to see the color changed to Ewha green, the school’s official color. Kang also found it practical regarding privacy to have the student image, ID number, and other personal information moved to the back of the card.

The switch to the new design will be free of charge, and students will be able to pick up their new ID cards at the Student Service Center. However, returning students should note that reissuance of the card earlier than the designated issue date will require students to pay a fee and will be renewed with the same design as before.
