A renowned pro-golfer Tiger Woods once said, “There is no achievement without goals.”
Clear target dates should be set to create a tensional environment necessary in accomplishing a goal. We all experience moments of learning and sharing in our lives. I believe that what allowed you all to come to Ewha Womans University are many challenges and achievements that you have come across during the course of learning and sharing. Today, I would like to say a few words on living a full life with achievements and charity.
Firstly, become a leader of a group that you belong to. Becoming a leader of people different from oneself means taking responsibility for improving contribution to the group by maximizing one’s own and other people’s abilities. In order to show this kind of leadership, the leader should be honest, respectful to serve others. One should make every effort to commit to a common goal of the group and have confidence in oneself. The leader should endlesssly try to  contribute to the group.
As for me, after graduating from  a dental school, it has been 24 years since I came to Ewha Womans University Medical Center to do residency, and I have taken on a leadership role as a chairman and professor of the Department of Dentistry. From my experience, the people I met during college, graduate school and residency, have had huge influence in my life. I have expanded my expertise by participating in various school activities and meeting people in other specialties. Friendship built among the students of natural sciences, engineering, and liberal arts will become a great advantage in the next 10 years.
Secondly, positively accept changes. When one boldly and courageously seizes the opportunity of change, inadequacy of the leadership is fulfilled, and one will receive a very valuable reward in return of the process and result.
Imagine, sincerely hope and believe, and act enthusiastic towards your dream.
The world is changing everyday through the advancements in science and technology which turn our imaginations into reality. If one is not able to adapt to these changes, she is not qualified to become a leader as an alumnus of Ewha.
There is one volunteer activity that I would like to share among the students at Ewha. Ewha Medical Care has a 20-year history of volunteering, in which 5 to 10 Ewha students participate voluntarily in the program twice a year to accomplish the missions of Ewha Womans University Medical Center.
Currently, there are some people who become bankrupt and go through hardships as they are unable to handle the rapid changes in the medical field. Therefore, it is recommended to actively participate in various academic, cultural, and volunteer activities, and establish and maintain firm relationships with other people in order to deal with these kinds of changes.
Ewha Womans University was first founded 120 years ago by Madame Mary Scranton who had served God and spirit of self-sacrifice. In remembrance of Madame Scranton, I hope Ewha students are honored to start following her steps in order to become future female leaders of the world.

Professor Kim Sun-jong is a professor of the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Dentistry, School of Medicine. He received his bachelor degree in Dentistry from Yonsei University and his master’s degree and Ph.D. in Korea University.
