In China, Guangzhou has been regarded as a window for China to look at the world. Guangzhou has been kept free, opened to foreign contacts. Due to the days of closed-door policy of China, It is a land of freedom and democracy that gave birth to Jinan University.
The name of the university “Jinan” comes from “The Tribute of Yu”, one of the Confucian Classics, which reads, “Reaching Eastward to the North and South, we shall spread the culture far and wide.” The university started from Jinan Academy, which was founded in 1906 by the Qing government in Nanjing, and then moved to Shanghai. During the Sino-Japanese and Pacific Wars, the university operated from Jianyang, Fujian Province and returned to Shanghai in 1946. As the People’s Republic of China was established in August 1949 it was merged with Shanghai’s Fudan and Jiaotong Universities, but in 1958 it had been reestablished as an independent institution and moved to Guangzhou in China’s southern province of Guangdong.
Though going through ups and downs with the history of the nation since its foundation in 1906, Jinan University has never lost its goal in pursuit of truth and knowledge. Under the guidance of the school motto, “Loyalty, Sincerity, Integrity and Respect,” in line with the aim “Modernization, Internationalization and Comprehensiveness,” Jinan University has been developing quickly. In 1996, the university was selected as one of China’s “One Hundred Key Universities.” Since then, Jinan University has successfully realized a major moving toward the development of instruction, scientific research and social services. In 2007, Jinan University gained an “Excellent” ranking from the National Undergraduate Education Appraisal Task Force organized by China’s Ministry of Education.
The University has 25 colleges, comprised of 49 departments and offers 76 undergraduate major fields. Among the 49 departments, 43 departments offer master degree programs and 19 departments offer Ph.D degree programs. Still, the university has one national engineering center, seven ministerial centers and provincial centers, and 11 key ministerial and provincial key laboratories.
The four campuses of Jinan University are located in three cities, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai. A new campus is being built in Guangzhou.
Jinan University has been active at academic exchanges, and has established academic cooperation and exchange liaison with more than 180 universities and research institutes in Asia, America, Europe, and Oceania.
