Seoul Folk Flea Market, place to feel nostalgia of old Seoul

▲ Old second-had items can be found at reasonable price the Seoul Folk Flea Market
An old typewriter, LP records, cassette tapes, film cameras. Secondhand items overflow at the Seoul Folk Flea Market, which originated in the early 1950s. Its name was “Hwanghak-dong flea market,” and moved to Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium but settled in Hwanghak-dong, near Sinseol-dong station a few years ago. With its long history, diverse secondhand items are present in more than 800 shops in its two-story site.
The two-story site, the Seoul Folk Flea Market, is divided to seven areas with rainbow colors that visitors can easily go to and find the items that they want. The first floor consists of four areas of yellow for sundried goods, orange for vintage clothing, green for antiques, and red for food court. The second floor also has four colors, blue area for clothing, navy for sundry goods, violet for items related to hobbies such as golf and hiking, and more. Also, there is another food court and information center.
“It is my second time visiting this market and it really comforts me. Also, different to other places, it is also easy to find items by the well-organized directories,” said Evan Lee from Canada. Everything is so colorful, cheap, and makes me hard to get my eyes off. Today, I bought several LP records and vintage sunglasses to bring back to my country for a souvenir.”
There is also traditional arts and crafts studio where foreigners and Koreans can experience making Korean traditional fans, hanji (traditional Korean paper) crafts, and more for free. The studio opens from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day.
Different to other places in Seoul such as Insa-dong or Samcheong-dong, the Seoul Folk Flea Market is the place to feel nostalgia, find real treat for a bargain price, and experience Korean arts and crafts.
The Seoul Flea Market is located about 100 meters away from Sinseol-dong station, Exit 9, on subway line number two. It opens  from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. For more information, call (02) 3707-8001~3, or visit the Web site (http://pungmul.seoul.go.kr).
