Ewha had originally announced its intention in 2009 to build its second campus at Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do.
Ewha was willing to pursue the plan even when the land cost increased double to the initial expected cost. However, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) rejected Ewha’s purchase request, requiring a fee nearly three times what Ewha had offered.Sensing compromise with the MND to be practically impossible, Ewha expressed its wish in January 2011 to cancel the proposed Education and Research Complex.
“Gyeonggi-do and Paju-si made unofficial proposals to persuade Ewha to adhere to the original plan, but we felt that too many difficulties would arise in the course of finalizing the deal,” said President Kim.
President Kim thanked all those who had supported her through the Education and Research Complex construction plan. She also promised to redirect her focus to the current Ewha campus.
“Until now, the Paju project has been forestalling me from giving my full attention to Ewha, but I will now make improving the Ewha campus environment my priority.”
