The program began with special lectures provided by two famous professors: Ahn Cheol-soo (Korea Advanced Institute of Science Technology) and Pamela Hartigan (Oxford University).
Professor Ahn, who is famous for developing V3 computer virus vaccine, lectured on the main goal and the importance of social entrepreneurship. It is also considered as one of the main philosophy of his company, AhnLab, Inc.
“What you do accounts for two thirds of your entire achievement. The remaining one third of the achievement is accomplished by help from society and supporters,” professor Ahn said.
Professor Hartigan, talked on “Challenges and Joys of Being a Change Maker.”
“Social entrepreneurs do not want to establish their own hospital or school,” professor Hartigan said. “Instead, social entrepreneurs want to change and develop the systems and practices of hospitals or schools.”
With the lectrues provided by the two experts in social entrepreneurship, Ewha students were motivated by the idea of helping the society and doing the business simultaneously.
“What professor Hartigan said was very inspiring,” Lee Eun-jae (English, 4) said. “Her words might have appeared cliche to some people, however, for me, it was powerful and memorable.”
After the lectures, a panal discussion proceeded with the social entrepreneurs and they shared their thoughts on the future plans for establishing social entrepreneurship worldwide.
To promote students’ interest on social entrepreneurship, School of Business gave out free movie tickets to students to watch movies related to social entrepreneurship played at the Art House Momo in ECC on May 17 and 18.
