The 44th election for the Student Government Association (SGA) of Ewha will take place on Nov. 23 and 24. Only one party has signed up for the election, Dareun Ewha. Dareun Ewha, where dareun means different in Korean, consists of Ryu Ea-seul (Political Science, 4) as the president candidate and Kim Ji-young (Philosophy, 2) as the vice-president candidate. As their name indicates, they pledge to change Ewha by resolving issues regarding high tuition and insufficient amount of scholarships. Their motto is “For the different future of Ewha with the power of the students.”

“Although we are bewildered that there is only one presidential party signed up for the 44th SGA, Dareun Ewha will work double tides to reach students throught the 2010 fall election ,” Ryu said. “Dareun Ewha will always be on the students’ side than the schools.”

They proposed pledges in 12 aspects: tuition, establishing reserve funds, resolving controversies over the Paju campus, better education, SGA and community, autonomy and welfare. Other pledges include a better studying environment at the library, preparations for employment, a cultural life on campus, and extended scholarships.

Dareun Ewha especially emphasizes two pledges, a cap on tuition and strengthened communication among the Ewha family. Regarding tuition, the party plans to organize a commission for democratic tuition deliberation and will work for its establishment from December.

Dareun Ewha also proposes to strengthen the role of the SGA by actively communicating with students by visiting classrooms and establishing a café at the SGA headquarters where students can freely gather for seminars or team projects.

They also propose to open a choir contest in March as a means to unite the Ewha family. They will gather 1,000 Ewha students from 60 different departments.

“As our motto says ‘with Ewha student’s power,’ we think the SGA should be familiar with its fellow students,” Ryu said. “Dareun Ewha wants to actively communication with students and establish an SGA that stands up for the students.”

Their pledges also include more student lounges, shorter intervals for the school bus and better student cafeterias. The official campaign will last until Nov.22. A public hearing on the candidate’s policies will take place on Nov. 16 and 22. Hearings at the Chapel will proceed from Nov. 15 to 19. Voting takes place on Nov. 23 and 24.
As there is only one party signed up for the election, it will be an up-or-down vote. The elections require at least a 50 percent participation rate from eligible voters to approve the winning party.
