CAPTION: Guests participate in the tape cutting event during the dedication ceremony for the now-completed Ewha Campus Complex.

Dedication ceremony of the Ewha Campus Complex (ECC) was held on April 29 at ECC to celebrate the completion of the construction which have started in May 2005. The ceremony was divided into two sections; the dedication service and a tour of ECC. At the event, 300 guests were invited including President Lee Bae-young, President of Ewha Haktang Yoon Hoo-jung, the Ambassador of Embassy of France in Korea Philippe Thiebaud, the architect Dominique Perrault.

At the dedication service, President Lee introduced the ECC as a technologically advanced multicampus which will raise the educational and cultural standards of Ewha to international levels. “The ECC is a U-campus where all kinds of up-to-date information and communication technology are facilitated. It also includes global zone and the largest seminar room among other universities ofKorea. I think the ECC includes those ‘future-oriented facilities’ which will satisfy Ewha students’ diverse needs of the educational environment,” said Lee.

The second half of the ceremony started with a tape cutting event by the 17 representative guests. The ceremony was continued with unveiling the copperplate located at the 4th floor of the ECC which was made to thank the supporters and commemorate the successful construction of the Building.

Ewha-Samsung Art Hall is scheduled to be open in August and the Sunken Garden located at the right corner all through out 1st to 4th floor of the ECC was introduced as the representative facility of the ECC. The Sunken Garden was presented by Dominique Perrault himself as it had a deep symbolic meaning. “When designing this underground campus complex, I put light as one of the most important considerations, since I wanted to allow people feel they were not underground because of enough light. The appearance of the Sunken Garden resembles fish skin and will provide light from the top to the bottom of the building. Also, the art center located at the center of the complex will serve as the source of light coming from the inside of the complex. When the art center opens, I expect the building to be much brighter,” said Dominique Perrault.

ECC, the multi-purpose educational underground campus complex designed by Dominique Perrault, is about 20,000 pyeong (about 66,000 square meters) which consists of six floors including two floors of parking spaces. The complex includes various educational, cultural and convenient facilities including study rooms, seminar rooms, lecture halls, a global zone, multipurpose halls, an art hall, a fitness center and administrative offices.
