The world has changed. There is no need to study by conventional methods. Books have transformed into electronic tablets and music CDs have transited to streaming sites. Libraries have been digitalized. People carry smartphones to search through the internet using wireless connections. These outbreaking changes can be explained under 3 letters: 4, 21, and Y.

4 is for the 4th Industrial Revolution. This so-called “new” paradigm has been mentioned dating years from now. Big data, blockchains, bitcoins, AI, Machine learning, and so on. If you have not heard about these terms, you are missing something. People are demanding so much information to the newcomers who just got into university. Authorities repetitively emphasize the importance of utilizing these kinds of phenomenal technologies. You should know much more about the techs, encode your program using Java or C++. If you are majoring in liberal arts, you should definitely double major in computer science or business. Companies are seeking people with interdisciplinary abilities. As the old proverb says; “A rolling stone gathers no moss”. Additionally, besides getting used to computer codes, business administrations, and (if needed) humanities, if you are good at designing, you are welcome to any job openings.

So, revolution is here. The level of convenience indeed rose, too. However, at the same time, we have to learn and adapt to modern technology. Other standards to fill in to be a good applicant popped up. Keeping up with the trend is not easy for grownups nowadays. However, what is interesting is that there are people who are somewhat “native” to this tumultuous world; the new generation who was born in the 21st century, also called “digital natives”. They were born with the tremendous growth of the video platform, YouTube. Smartphones are their necessities. From the world of writings and pictures, now videos are in the center of every media. Kids create and edit their videos and upload them on web sites. They have their own SNS page and contact with each other through SNS messengers, not through texts. In school, they learn computer codes staring from an elementary level that adults nowadays are learning in a hustle. The generation gap occurs. In the near future, they are our customer targets or our competitors. But frankly, they might already be our very most rivals.

We have a whole new environmental change going around, and the new generation is rising. Then who are young adults of this society? Generation Y. Generation Y is a demographical term for people who are born between 1980 and 2000. They are in between this confusing society and the uprising kids. This generation is often called “a generation of anxiousness”. Y’s are preparing to jump into society, graduating from their educational curriculums. But, anxiety about how one could adapt to a changing world and live a better life is always near them. Would Y’s can live better than their predecessors? Would they be a match with the new generations in this revolutionized society?

This kind of revolution is not something new. There has always been the advancement of technology, and there have always been youngsters and grownups. But we need to think that there might be too many expectations for Ys. It is simpler this way: when the older generations say to the younger to be more prepared and be innovative, the mind of Ys inflates. If it is inflated just right in size, it could evoke the feeling of ambitions and inspirations. However, if you inflate it too big, it might burst. So, don’t rush on them and understand fully on Ys. After all, they are the pivot of this transitional period.
