The Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra put on its premier performance at the Concert Hall in the Seoul Arts Center (SAC) on May 3. The performance titled “Rachmaninov Piano Music Series I” was staged to commemorate the 140th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninov, a renowned Russian composer, pianist and conductor.
The Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra is an unprecedented university philharmonic orchestra in Korea, composed of 80 members who are currently enrolled Ewha students and alumnae. Since its establishment in January of this year, the orchestra has staged four performances in and outside Ewha. Its first stage was in the Welch-Ryang Auditorium. The stage at the SAC is significant for the orchestra because it is the first time performing in front of a general public audience at the SAC.
“It is a very special occasion for a university orchestra to have both students and graduates perform together,” said Choi Jeong-in, an official in Communications. “Moreover, performing in the SAC is highly honorable for any musician.”
The program included Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini Op.43, Piano Concerto No. 2 and Piano Concerto No. 3, which were accompanied by Peter Ovcharov, Aviram Reichert and Miroslav Kultyshev, respectively. The three male pianists are widely known as the young and talented big three.
“The fact that the Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra was able to perform in harmony with such global pianists demonstrates how we have opened a new vista for university orchestras,” Choi said. “We believe this proves the significant position of Ewha’s College of Music. The Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra will further contribute to the development of college music education by cultivating original musicianship.”
