The Division of Human Movement Studies was selected as the Korean School Sports League Center by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) on March 8.Led by professor Kim Kyung-sook (Human Movement Studies), the Korean School Sports League Center at Ewha will receive financial support of 600 million won from the MEST to contribute to invigorating sports activities of elementary and secondary schools until February 2014.As the project of MEST aims to activate school sports leagues in Korea, it received applications from prospective agencies and organizations, which possess expertise and capability to effectively operate and lead sports club league. Among other applicants, Ewha’s Division of Human Movement Studies was finally chosen as the Korean School Sports League Center.To be selected as the main agent in leading school sports league, Division of Human Movement Studies went through two stages of process: application and presentation. The MEST’s criteria of Korean School Sports League Center included the completion of a project outline and cooperation with other local agencies.“We found strong, cooperative ties between Ewha Division of Human Movement Studies and local schools or agencies around Ewha,” said Kang Kyung-tak, an official of the MEST. “Also, professor Kim’s eagerness in taking this project was valued highly.”The major projects will include promoting school sports club league, consulting, educating and examining the results. The MEST will develop a guideline to operating school sports club league for each sport, so that secondary schools can adopt and introduce the system more efficiently. In addition, it plans to develop an application utilizing Physical Activity Promotion System results through which participating schools can systemically manage the league. At the same time, by cooperating with local sports related agencies such as universities and councils for sports, the center will manage the project’s overall progress and accomplishments. Students from the Division of Human Movement Studies will also partake in promoting school sports activities by volunteering or monitoring the progress of the league.“Since we were selected as the Korean School Sports League Center, we will provide full support and do our best in managing school sports club leagues,” professor Kim said. “We plan to monitor, listen and look for more ways to improve the system and environment. By doing so, we hope sports club activities in Korean schools can be expanded and invigorated in the near future.”
