The season of assignments in Ewha is just around the corner. For many students who are busy doing team projects, club activities, and catching up on classes, writing papers for a class can be another burden. The first thing students do when starting to write a paper is to look for sources online. However, this is the moment students need to be extremely careful, because they may unknowingly be plagiarizing.
In academia, plagiarism is considered academic dishonesty. Plagiarism has been a problem for a long time, since the 18th century. With the development of technology, there are now more chances for people to plagiarize. Many celebrities and renowned scholars have been accused of plagiarizing. Kim Mi-kyung (Policy Sciences, Graduate School), also a famous lecturer who recently jumped to stardom for her program “Kim Mi-kyung Show” on cable Television Channel Total Variety Network, is under suspicions of plagiarizing in her 2007 Master’s degree thesis.
Likewise, plagiarism in universities is getting more serious, and universities have been trying to solve this problem by using softwares like Meme Checker Cloud and Copy Killer, which detect plagiarism online by sorting out information. In this issue, the Ewha Voice will define plagiarism, try to find the root of the problem and suggest the possible solutions.
