Ewha was placed 341st on the 2012 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings on Sept. 10, moving up three notches from that of last year. Among domestic universities on the 2012 QS World University Rankings, Ewha placed 9th. By subject, the Life Science and Medicine faculty were ranked 338th, moving up 61 steps from 399th last year. On the contrary, the rank of the department of Social Science and Management dropped from 245th to 251th and the department of Art and Humanities ranked 150th from 170th in 2011. Since 2009, Ewha has been showing steady improvement in the World University Rankings. Ewha ranked 397th in 2009, 348th in 2010, and 344th in 2011, demonstrating a consistent improvement. “I believe that the improvement of Ewha’s ranking reflects the constant effort of the school in every aspect, including research and education,” said an official in the Office of University Planning and Coordination. The QS World University Rankings is made by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an English company specializing in education and studying abroad. The ranking system was first launched in 2004, and uses six factors for universities’ evaluation: Academic reputation (40 percent), employer reputation (10 percent), student/faculty ratio (20 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), proportion of international faculty (5 percent), and proportion of international students (5 percent). It is regarded as one of the three most influential and widely observed international university rankings, along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities. “Only the steady and best efforts of all the members of the Ewha community will guarantee constant improvement,” the official said. “Those improvements will not only be simply reflected through the rankings, but also through the positive assessment of the school.”
