The prologue begins, "Sidda is a girl again in the hot heart of Louisiana, the bayou world of Catholic saints and voodoo queens." The story deals with the world of the Ya-Yas, an eccentric group of Southern belles who grew up together in a Southern state(Louisana) in a time when young debutantes were expected to behave according to rather rigid social rules. There is great humor in their inability, or sometimes deliberate refusal to adhere to those rules. Nothing stuffy abut the Ya-Yas! No sirree! As you read, you grow to appreciate the fierce female loyalty of this sisterhood, born of their love for each other and the ordeals and triumphs of each from childhood on.
