▲ President Kim Sun-uk and a student volunteer take a pledge in the Lee Sam Bong Hall in ECC. After the ceremony, students visited individual seniors’ houses to lend hands for chores and emotional support.
To commemorate the 125th anniversary, Volunteer Center organized a volunteer program called “A Scent of Love from Ewha,” to help 13,898 local elders living in Seodaemun-gu and Mapo-gu.
The program was held on May 20 in Lee Sam Bong Hall of the Ewha Campus Complex and it continued to be carried out at houses of the elders who needed further assistance.
“To honor the anniversary, members of Ewha tried to fulfill the spirit of neighborliness through the activities contributing to local community,” said An Yoon-jin from the Volunteer Center.
For the program, 250 Ewha members including students and faculties signed up during the application period starting from May 2 to the date of volunteer work. Volunteer Center also provided three orientations for the participants.
The opening ceremony, which  was held at the Lee Sam Bong Hall before the actual work, was initiated with the delivering words of encouragement from president Kim Sun-uk.
“I hope this volunteer activity would encourage Ewha students to share their warmness and participate actively in helping others not today only, but continuously,” president Kim said.
Through the program, students had chance to experience true “Non Nobis Solum,” by helping the local elders face to face.
“I felt sympathy when the elders talked about their loneliness. They usually have no one to talk to or share their thoughts, and this motivated me to do more volunteer activities for the elders around the campus,” Lee Chae-young (Early Childhood Education, 1) said. “It was a special moment to all of us.”
