As May is designated as national family month in South Korea, President Lee Myung-bak made remarks on the idea of giving thanks to those around us in his 40th radio and internet speech. During his speech, he reminded the nation of this idea by showing gratitude to various groups ranging from parents who have withstood “all kinds of tribulations,” our country’s committed teachers and also to those courageous patriots who tremendously contributed to establishing the Republic of Korea.
However, in contrast to this, there are those who have chosen to dishonor those around them. The Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations, which is the largest organization for teachers that contributes to the advancement of teachers’ rights and the enhancement of education in Korea, has refused to commemorate teacher’s day for the first time since its inception 28 years ago, mainly due to the numerous scandals of corruption in educational circles. Also, a 40-year-old man who seriously injured his 80-year-old parents by beating them up was sentenced for six months in jail.
Despite these incidents, we should not allow these happenings to cloud our view and get in the way of sharing our gratitude to those who truly deserve it.
You do not have to look far to find examples of people who have chosen to give thanks. For instance, a book was released on May 13 which was a collection of letters between a teacher and a student over a period of 15 years. Also, the student government association at Inje University built a six meter long tree, with 3,000 colorful balloons built to gratify teacher’s day. While students from Im Kown-Taek College of Film & Performing Arts, at Dongseo University, created a musical to honor the five professors in their department.
So, the real question is, “when was the last time you thanked someone with the utmost sincerity?” I believe with the rush of homework and projects, the daily quizzes along with lots more to imagine, it seems to be a hard question to answer. If you have neglected to show thanks to others in your life, this time is better than any other as it holds more meaning, so don’t forget what President Lee said “a positive attitude is the engine of progress, and gratitude is the main source of the warmth in our society.”
