Of course, there are many other departments that unique t-shirts, but the important thing is that the t-shirts promote a bond among students and show pride in each major. Thus, the shirts are now being joyfully worn by many Ewha students, which in turn help to brighten the campus during the festival held in May.
Walking around the campus, students can be seen wearing uniforms. One might steal a curious look at those shirts and notice the letters on the back, indicating the name of a certain college to which they belong, and wonder how they came about.

The designs and colors of each shirt are unique to their own character. Among the many that have entered the racks of fashionable clothes worn by Ewha students, the Ewha Voice picked t-shirts from three different colleges that distinctly portray the unique and original spirit of the college. To find out the details of how the shirts came into being, the Ewha Voice interviewed the  presidents of the three colleges: President Ko Bo-ram (Computer Science, 3) of the College of Engineering, President Lee Seul-ki (Pharmacy, 3) of the College of Pharmacy, and President Park Kyung-hwa (Public Administration, 3) of the College of Social Sciences.

College of Engineering

The 2008 Marathon, which is held around the time of the Korean Thanksgiving, is a festival only for students enrolled in the College of Engineering. For the event, the student council of the College of Engineering designed its own t-shirt with an engineering calculator that resembles an animated character, Sponge Bob, running at the back of the t-shirt. “In order to include a symbol of both the engineering department and the marathon, we thought up an engineering calculator posing for a ferocious run, with a smile on its face for the sake of expressing a positive image of our department,” said Ko. However, a trivial mistake can be found next to the brilliant image. On the back of the t-Shirt, the word “engine” has been misspelled as “enghine.” “We had to rush while making the t-shirt, so there was a spelling mistake in the process. As you know, the letters “g” and “h” are next to each other on the keyboard,” said Ko. She said that although they were shocked when they first saw the T-shirt, they now joke that the ‘“h” is a mute sound and that it was intentional.

College of Pharmacy

One can easily recognize the origin of the mint colored hood t-shirt that displays an opened green medicine capsule with the word “pharmacy” spilling out like powder coming from the pill. Although not the official color of the College of Pharmacy, the mint color was chosen for its association to the student council. “The name for this year’s student council is ‘Her B,’ which represents 4Bs: Brain for studying environment, Bridge for promoting communication, Booster for energizing students’ spirit, and Best for doing our best. Since the pronunciation for our name is similar to “herb,” we have decided to make the symbolic color for this year’s t-shirt as the color of herb, which is mint,” said Lee.

College of Social Sciences

On a dark blue background, blocks of symbolic images are arranged inside a rectangular toy set. The blocks represent the eight departments in College of Social Sciences. The most interesting attribute of the t-shirt is that it shows a sense of gathering among departments with a person resembling a robot that has an apple-shaped heart. An analogy for a “social sciences person” is pronounced as “Sagua,” meaning apple in Korean so it is placed next to the symbols. Park said, “For the final design, members of the student council contemplated head-to-head with each other and held an official vote among students to hear their voices as much as possible. With this outcome, all of us are satisfied and delighted!”
