South Korea's Wartime Operational Control

   The right to control the South Korean Army in the Korean peninsula during warfare. In principal, the commander-in-chief is in charge of this right. South Korea transferred the right to General Douglas MacArthur of the United Nations forces before the Korean War (1950-53) in 1950.
   ROK-U.S. Mutual Defense Agreement: A mutual agreement between South Korea and the U.S., which enables the U.S. military to intervene if there is military conflict in South Korea. It was concluded in 1953 after the Korean War to defend South Korea against North Korea.
